The Amazing History and Revolution of 3D Technology

The 3D technology can be traced back to the era of photography, having experienced a series of technologically driven revolution. In 1844, David Brewster developed the stereoscope that could take photographic images in 3D.

In 1851, Louis Jules Duboscq decided to take a picture of Queen Victoria which he displayed at an Exhibition after improving on Brewster’s invention.  Duboscq’s picture became very well known throughout the world. Stereoscopic cameras started to appeal to most people and it became fairly common for personal use by World War II.

A few years later, many more inventions surpassed the stereoscopic cameras with the arrival of Kinematascope in 1855 which was a stereo animation camera. This camera was able to produce 3D motion pictures. This invention led to the first anaglyph movie requiring viewers to use 3D glasses. The Anaglyph technology allows 2 different colours on the glasses to direct an image to each eye.

In 1890, William Friese-Greene, a British film developer, filed a patent for 3D movie processing. The beauty of this technology led to the display of the first public 3D movie in 1922 titled, “The Power of Love”.

TVs became extremely popular in the 1950s and had started appearing in many households. The 3D technology resurfaced again during this time as a number of movies were produced in 3D.

The following movies were produced in 3D:

“Bwana Devil” by United Artists was displayed across the United States in 1952. This was the first of its kind in the 50s; the film was shot using a process called Natural Vision. “House of Wax” was produced in 1953. “Robinson Crusoe”, the first Soviet Union full length movie was released in 1947.

“Dial M for Murder” was originally planned to be released in 3D but Alfred Hitchcock decided to release the movie in 2D to maximize profits. In the United States, not all movie theaters were equipped with the 3D technology at that time; however 3D films were also developed outside of the United States. In the1960s a new technology called Space-Vision 3D was released requiring two images to be printed over each other on a single strip. 

The first movie to use this technology was “The Bubble” which attracted a huge audience and became profitable. This new technology was ready for promotion to other studios. Chris Condon and Allan Silliphant developed the Stereovision technology in 1970. This technology used a distinctive anamorphic lens that would broaden the picture using a sequence of Polaroid filters.

The first movie to be released in Stereovision was a soft-core sex comedy called “The Stewardess”. The movie cost only $100,000 to make and it earned an amazing $27 million in North America. In the early 1980s, many movies were released in 3D using the same process as Space Vision. A few products of this technology were:

“Jaws 3-D” In the mid-1980s, IMAX began producing documentary films in 3D. The IMAX 3D technology emphasized mathematical correctness which eliminated fatigue that was seen in other 3D technologies.

In 1986, Canada developed the first 3D movie for Expo 86 titled “Echoes of the Sun” which used polarized glasses. IMAX proceeded to become the toast of movie producers as many movies were released in IMAX 3D.

The first IMAX 3D fiction film “Wings of Courage” was released in 1996 while the most successful IMAX 3D film released during this time was “Into the Deep”.
Proceeding into the millennium, many big studio movies were released in 3D. Here’s a list of movies released during that time:

In 2003, James Cameron released “Ghosts of the Abyss”.

In 2004, “The Polar Express”.  The 3D earned 14x as much per screen as the 2D version. In 2005, “The Mann’s Chinese 6 theater in Hollywood” became the first commercial movie theater to have the digital 3D technology. In 2007, Scar 3D was released internationally and it was filmed using a completely digital workflow.

In 2010, the 3D technology’s reputation got established as Sky UK made a big push towards it.  South Korea began broadcasting through its first 3D channel in January 1, 2010.  We these rapid 3D technological advancements, we expect the use of this exciting technology to continue and expand into homes as television sets.
